Personal Challenge

I’m challenging you to choose one thing this month that you want to change and stick with.

You all know I love coffee. You see me share about it, talk about it, and mention it. It’s part of my morning routine, it’s part of my afternoon and part of my social interactions. I love to make coffee upon rising, I love to pop into Temple for a baby iced latte, and I love to have an afternoon delight by Nespresso or drip coffee. I enjoy it alone, with my pets, with friends, with my grandma or while taking a break on the studio couch.

But like most things, all good things come to an end…or at least a break. This was a slow build, but leading up to early January, I just felt like coffee wasn’t serving me anymore and I needed to take a break. Something intuitively told me to just back off for a bit, give yourself a break and after that break (although it will be hard), you can bring it back into your day.

So, on January 23rd, I made an executive decision: no coffee for 3 weeks. 😱 No matter what. This was a very personal challenge as I couldn't tell you the last time I was truly strict with myself or didn’t make coffee in the morning. But I was determined. And I SUCCEEDED. Honestly, just being able to prove to myself that I could do it was the biggest success. It’s such a great feeling.

Part of the success in making this happen was knowing that I needed to supplement my coffee with something else warm and cozy that I could make in the morning. That trade – Cosmic Cocoa from Moon Juice Co. - not too sweet, full of nutrients, no bloating. Making this yummy drink helped me slowly eliminate coffee/caffeine  from my day.  Apart from the cacao, I was also supplementing with herbal tea, Matcha and an occasional Chai.

By having the Cosmic Cocoa, I was still able to enjoy my warm drink, not drink coffee and stay on course with my personal challenge. Of course there were times where I really wanted to have coffee, especially when getting a whiff of its perfect smell, but I was adamant about sticking to my challenge. I just had to do it and the most pivotal part here was that the challenge became more important than the coffee and that’s what helped me stick with it.

Most importantly, by not having the coffee, I was able to see/feel some changes in my body – less stress, less anxiousness in my body, better bathroom sessions, learning that I didn’t need caffeine to jolt my day and that I have great natural energy, and I only dealt with a half day of withdrawal headaches. Not too bad. And really happy to feel/know the difference of not having coffee. Proud of me.

But challenge over, back to adding coffee into my day…not as much and maybe a bit more decaf! And will certainly keep going with the Cosmic Cocoa.

So now I am challenging YOU!

Make your own personal challenge/goal for a few weeks and do your best to stick with it. This can be anything that would serve you best - eliminating sugar, getting a daily walk in, no alcohol, moving your body more often, or eliminating caffeine! Whatever it is that you feel would make a positive impact in your life. And whether you stick to it for 2 weeks or 1 month or keep rolling with it is entirely up to you. Science claims it only takes 2 weeks to make or break a habit, so I encourage you to follow through for at least that long and see how you’re feeling. And let me know if you want any help or motivation along the way! I would love to hear what you decide to challenge yourself to and how it turns out!
